Restoration of “Windows” and “Time” Halls within the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant (A museum in danger!)
On September 14, 2004, on the Day of the Cross, which coincides with the day of Horia Bernea, the Anonimul Foundation organized the event “On the Day of the Cross. Alms. Priming”, meant to draw the attention of the public opinion and the authorities on the mutilation of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant. The management of the museum had decided to abolish “Windows” and “Time” Halls, halls for which MNTR received in 1996 the European Museum of the Year Award. In an article entitled "The vocation of demolition" Andrei Pleşu publicly demanded the resignation of director Dinu C. Giurescu.
The event began with an exhibition on the meadow in Kiseleff 1-3, where the former collaborators of Irina Nicolau and Horia Bernea made an installation with images and objects from the destroyed rooms, surrounded by peasant clothes. The exhibition was opened by Neagu Djuvara and Vintilă Mihăilescu, and the taraf from Naipu - Ghimpați performed throughout the day.
At the Prometheus Club (link) there were screenings with "Windows" and "Time" Halls, followed by a round table moderated by Andrei Pleșu. Horia Bernea, Irina Nicolau and the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant spoke about: Anca Oroveanu, Ioana Popescu, Răzvan Exarhu and Horia Roman-Patapievici.
The participants addressed a petition to the Minister of Culture and Religious Affairs requesting the restoration of "Windows" and "Time" Halls and their declaration of heritage assets.
The action coordinated by Dragoș Bucurenci enjoyed full success, after which the two halls were rebuilt.
